Introducing Zvonko Markovic, a Serbian Fashion designer. We asked Zvonko about he’s work and the fashion industry.
What do you think is the most interesting thing in your line of work?
Working in fashion is constant research and an art of a human figure. While photography is two-dimensional and sculpture is three-dimensional, static fashion has one dimension more.
Forth dimension in fashion is made by a movement of human body, woman or men, that wear the design. Finding a way to satisfy all these criterias, two-dimensional and three-dimensional forms, and to bring it up to that “forth dimension level” is the real challenge for me.
What inspired your Paris Fashion Week Collection?
In this collection I wanted to tell a Fashion story. Transforming a caterpillar into a night butterfly. Cocoon that’s slowly breaking and let’s the butterfly fly (like on my golden leather black dress with leaves). Also, bring the beauty out of a short life that butterfly’s have. Black, but rich in texture, transparent with light details. And the most fascinating part to me was creating the ruffles that give the effect of “dust wings” of my night’s butterfly.
How do you choose materials that you work with?
I have to be honest, materials are a starting base for a collection from which I generate the idea. Sometimes I take different pieces and play around, to find a perfect spot for them on a human body, before I even have an idea of how the collection will look like at the end. When you find an exotic piece like an anaconda leather, it can be crucial in forming the collection and it can take your inspiration to a different side of things.
Brand you would love to work with?
When I was younger, I wanted to work with GFF, but as I got older I don’t think about it as much. Although, a lot of people tell me that ideally I would fit in YSL.
Where do you see your brand in 5 years time?
I will show new and better catwalks. Where? I don’t know yet. My work makes me feel accomplished and I know I have to work to survive. Am I going to be rich or famous or big.. I don’t like thinking about it that way. I want to work so people can see my pieces and enjoy them.
How much time does it take for you to form and design a new collection?
For me that is a long process. I start from working on the ideas I have at the moment. Once I start working, with every idea I have another one is born and after a while the collection takes its own course of making. Until I have around 10 pieces, I cant actually see where it is going. That’s when it all starts being crystal clear and pieces start merging together creating a form of the collection. Then, from all of the ideas, there’s that one that is right.
How would you describe the Fashion scene back home, in Serbia, and If you could change anything, what would that be?
Fashion scene in Serbia was “turned to itself” until not so long ago. Then, Serbia Fashion Week came and brought a very needed change, and that’s promoting our designers to the world. I think that fashion scene is now on the right way but that designers need a little bit more practise and hand-crafting education abroad.
