Fashion is the most understated art form. It is the only art form that we, collectively as human beings, take part in every day whether or not we actually care about fashion. The minute we wake up and go through the process of selecting something to wear, we are in essence, painting the picture of ourselves that we are going to present to the world that day. Whether you follow fashion religiously, like me, or barely even pay attention to new styles and designers, we are all artists in the fashion world. Fashion would never be where it is now if it wasn’t for its all-inclusive nature.
I believe that fashion is one of the most intimate art forms because it involves the clothing touching your skin. What is more personal than touch? Fashion has the power to inspire, laugh, empower, deflate, humiliate, and showcase. Because of this power and how intimate it is to our bodies, it is no wonder that clothing can make such big statements. Clothing evolved from being something that just covered our bodies to becoming an outlet through which each of us has the opportunity to express ourselves to the world. Our personalities come through our clothing whether we like it or not. We can be subtle or loud, humble or egocentric. We can even send many messages through our style.
Humans are visual creatures. While we all like to say that we have no pre-conceived notions of the people around us is simply unrealistic. First impressions are everything. While first impressions are not permanent, they do influence the way we view a person for a long period of time. Changing a first impression for better or worse is time consuming and sometimes very difficult. This is why I adore fashion. It is incredible to me that when I first meet someone I feel like I’ve already been given a glimpse into their personality through their fashion choices. People do not tend to tell you their life story at first encounters. Thus fashion is the peek we are granted into their world, dreams, likes, and dislikes. We just have to be observant enough to pick up on those things.
So the next time you meet someone or perhaps the next time you see a good friend, take a step back and observe their personality through their clothing. Who knows what you will discover!
