For this shoot we wanted to produce visuals that were worthy of being publicized. If I were to try to accomplish this with just Valerie Verhaar, our lovely model for the day, it would’ve still been an incredible shoot – it just would’ve been an impossible task to deliver the quality necessary to achieve our in-Vogue goal. Luckily, I didn’t have to do it all by myself. Supported by experienced hair and make-up artist Ed Krijgsman and stylist Roxanne van Herk, who brought her whole wardrobe of designer outfits for the shoot, we were able to come together and make our visions come to life.
However, in order for us to go that extra mile we really needed to step up our game! Simply thinking about it, seemed like a huge challenge. Little did we know everything we were about to do would blend together beautifully.
Little did we know everything we were about to do would blend together beautifully.
We went with the idea of playing with non-colors – black, silver, and a hint of white – to produce a lavish and sleek look, while still keeping the composition simple and effective. By integrating the colors of the clothing into Valerie’s make-up and accessories, we aimed to keep her look connected and cohesive. The monotone background allowed Valerie to be the focal point of the pictures and put emphasis on the styling and make-up. By changing up the compelling half body pictures with clean, straightforward portraits, we added some shifting dynamics to the viewer’s eye.
The whole experience was wonderful. My favorite moment was when I took the shot of Valerie wearing a large and expensive necklace, covered by the business-chic black coat. The necklace in itself looked to me like a work of art. With that realization, I just knew I had to do more of an artistic approach to capture the alluring elegance of it all. I was inspired to (literally) strip Valerie of the coat and take a seductive bust-shot of the glistening black beaded necklace. The end result was far greater than I could ever imagine. It made me shed a little tear of joy on the inside.
